The Ultimate Travel Packing Checklist (So You Stop Forgetting Things)

Never show up somewhere without your charger, your medication, or your passport again. This comprehensive travel packing checklist covers every trip type — weekend away to two-week vacation.

There are two types of people: those who pack a week in advance with a color-coded system, and those who are throwing things into a bag at 11pm the night before while desperately Googling “can I buy deodorant at the airport.” (The answer is yes, but it’s $14 and the experience is deeply unpleasant.)

This checklist is for both types — but especially the second one. Save it, print it, screenshot it. Use it every time you travel and you’ll never forget a single thing. Promise. ✈️

Before You Even Start Packing

  • Check your passport expiry date — many countries require 6 months validity beyond your travel dates
  • Check visa requirements for your destination
  • Print or download your booking confirmations, tickets, and accommodation details
  • Check the weather forecast for your destination so you pack appropriately
  • Look up luggage weight limits for your flight to avoid fees
  • Notify your bank of your travel dates so your card doesn’t get blocked abroad
  • Arrange pet or house care if needed

Documents and Essentials (Always in Your Carry-On)

  • Passport or ID
  • Boarding passes / travel tickets
  • Accommodation confirmations
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Emergency contact list (not just saved in your phone)
  • Any visas or entry requirements printed out
  • Credit/debit cards — bring more than one
  • Cash in local currency (especially for taxis, tips, and small vendors)
  • Driving licence if you’re renting a car

Clothing (Use the Roll Method — More Space, Less Creasing)

  • Tops — roughly one per day, plus one extra
  • Bottoms — fewer than you think. One pair of jeans or trousers goes with everything.
  • Underwear and socks — one per day, plus two extra
  • One smart or “going out” outfit if needed
  • Sleepwear
  • Swimwear if applicable
  • A light layer — a jacket or cardigan. Planes, restaurants, and air-conditioned anywhere are always cold.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and one pair of smarter shoes

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner (or solid bars — TSA-friendly and space-saving)
  • Body wash or soap
  • Deodorant
  • Skincare — your actual routine, not the full 12-step version
  • SPF — non-negotiable
  • Razor
  • Any medications — in original packaging for customs
  • Feminine hygiene products if applicable
  • Travel insurance card and any medical documentation

Tech and Cables (The Stuff You’ll Definitely Forget)

  • Phone charger
  • Laptop/tablet and charger if needed
  • Universal power adapter (essential for international travel)
  • Portable power bank — charged
  • Earphones or headphones
  • Camera and charger/memory cards if applicable
  • E-reader if you use one

The Carry-On Extras That Save Your Sanity

  • A reusable water bottle (fill it after security)
  • Snacks — airport food is expensive and sometimes bad
  • Lip balm and hand cream (planes are dehydrating)
  • Neck pillow and eye mask for longer flights
  • A pen (for customs forms — the one thing you always need and never have)
  • One change of clothes in your carry-on if checking luggage (just in case)

Before You Leave the House

  • Lock all windows and doors
  • Switch off unnecessary appliances
  • Turn down the heating or set it to away mode
  • Empty the fridge of anything that will expire while you’re gone
  • Take out the trash
  • Set up any lights or timers if you’re gone for more than a few days
  • Double-check you have your passport. Check again. Seriously.

Happy travels — may your bags arrive on time, your passport be valid, and your charger always be in the bag. Safe trip! 🌍
